Race Timing FAQ

This is the place to ask questions about the results for the race you participated in. Errors in result can occur for many reasons. Reasons such as:
  • Incomplete registration forms.
  • Unreadable registration forms.
  • Wearing the timing chip incorrectly.
  • Not wearing the chip at all.
  • The data provided by the race organizer was incomplete or inaccurate.
  • And yes, we made a mistake in data entry.

Answers to some common Questions:

What's the difference between the Final Time and Net Time?

The Final Time is the time from when the gun went off and the time the runner crosses the finish line. The Net Time is the time from when the runner crosses the start to the time the runner crosses the finish line.

Why aren't runners ranked by Net Time instead of Final (Gun)Time?

The races we time are scored and official times are determined per USA Track and Field (USAT&F) rules 165.4 and 165.16 which state:
  • (165.16) "The use of transponder timing systems in road and cross country races is permitted provided that: ...the determination of the official winning time is in accordance with Rule 165.4;"
  • (165.4) "The time shall be taken from the flash/smoke of the pistol or approved apparatus to the moment at which any part of the competitor’s body (i.e.,the “torso,” as distinguished from the head, neck, arms, hands, legs, or feet) reaches the perpendicular plane of the nearer edge of the finish line."
  • Timing Companies who score races based on "chip" time have done the running world a disservice. It leads to inaccurate results and situations where the first person across the finish line may not be the winner of the race. It also leads to confusion for the runners.
Finally, scoring races per USAT&F rules allows a runner to compare performances between races of the same length... no matter how they are timed.
(See Article 3, Rules Competition of the USTAF Rule Book.)

Why is my Net Time the same as the Final Time?

There are three likely reasons for this. One, the runner failed to cross the start line mats or crossed the start line before the gun went off. Two, indivdual start times were not captured for the race and the race was scored by Final Time. And three, the race director elected to ignore the USAT&F scoring rules and the race was scored by Net Time.

I still have my timing chip. How Do I return it?

Please return our timing chip by placing it in a padded envelope and mailing it to:

I am missing one of my splits. Can this be fixed?

This might be due to a glitch in the program that might have assigned one of your timing point crossing times to another interval. Please use the form below to contact us, so we can look into it and make the adjustment. After all races we do go through each and every result to check for that all splits are listed.

My result is not listed in the final results posting, but I saw it listed at the end of the race. Why is this?

If you participated in a Triathlon or another event with marshalling you may have received a penalty in the form of a DQ. Please check the DQ and Penalty list to see if your name is listed there.

I received a Penalty and/or a DQ. What do I do?

You will need to contact the Director of the Race you participated in to file a Protest. Please note that all penalties and dq's are posted at the end of the race once they are submitted by the Officials. An Official is present to hear complaints and protests at the end of the race, so if you left early you may not have seen your name on the Penalty List. Please note that some races have a limited protest time period and we can not change any times or penalties without authorization from the Race Director and the Head Official.

I think there is an error with my results, how do I get it corrected?

In many cases we can correct results if we have enough information available. Please fill out the form below completely. Any missing information will slow the process down. We will use this information to locate the available data and make any required corrections or answer your question. We understand this is not a very personal way to resolve any potential issues, but we have found this is the fastest way to start the investigation and answer your question. In most cases, you will have a response within an hour, but if you caught us preparing for a race or on a weekend it may take as long as 48 hours to get back to you.

Please Note: Some races have a published protest period. If you are outside of that period we may not be able to make any changes.
